Final Summary of my Learning Project

What…my album is done! I successfully finished my learning project. Although I had  a minor panic when I went to order the album and couldn’t find shipping to Canada! No need to worry, I am able to order my album!

Ordering my album

Ordering my album

I thought I would do a final post about what I have learned throughout the semester and my experience with this learning project. At first I was struggling to think of something to do. However, I soon realized that I have been wanting to make a digital photo album for a long time. I had not started the journey because I had no idea where to begin, how to make one, or what program to use. It just seemed so time consuming and so I never got started. In fact, I am not sure when I would have made my first digital photo album without this class. I can honestly say this was my favourite project of my four years of university, as it made me reflect on my journey from when I was young to now. It also made me see the positive impact my mother has had on me and the importance of being a positive role model to others (my students). I was able to take time away from the countless assignments and work on this very meaning project. While it did take me hours to do and often I felt overwhelmed at the amount of work I can see my hard work has paid off! Now that I know how to use Shutterfly and what to do I definitely want to make more albums and hopefully it will be a little easier!

I have learned that I use the internet, specifically google and youtube a lot when I need help. I often googled my questions and an instant answer would pop up! Thinking back to when there wasn’t google I believe this project would take even longer because I would have had to go read a book on shutterfly. Technology has enabled me to quickly find an answer from anywhere and work on my project from anywhere…it is always at the tip of my fingers. Having said that the scanning of photos could only be done at my house.

I also learned that my patience with technology is less. When I was waiting for the photos to load I could not figure out why it was taking so long. When the program would not respond to what I wanted it to do I would get frustrated.

I do not think I am as creative on Shutterfly as I would have been doing a scrapbook. Having it online took me a while to create the pages. I think I like to be able to physically move the pictures around. I remember in highschool if I had to make something I would always choose to do it with paper and supplies from the dollar store rather than using technology.

My ultimate learning was the importance of taking photos and documenting one’s life with technology. When I went through the photos I realized how amazing it was to go through my life. Memories came flooding back and for certain reasons I am so happy that I have photos of my family. These photos are special to me and I never want them to be lost. I also realized I like the photos that are not staged rather I prefer the ones that are taken in the moment!

I believe as a teacher I could use the Shutterfly Ipad app for students to make photo albums. I think a neat project would be to make a digital album rather than family trees. I do not like the family tree project because families are so different these days and it is often very hard to make a family tree.

The Ipad app also has a really neat tool where you can put audio to the pictures!

I also looked into other technologies that students could use in the classroom.

Adobe Voice is an education tool that lets you do voice overs to digital photos. It has awesome templates in terms of storytelling and a huge library of copyright friendly music and images. There is a video that explains Adobe voice.

Book Creator appears to be very child friendly. Students create their own book by adding images, text, and audio. Only problem is it can only be shown on IOS products.

I think students would have fun with these different programs and they would not have to use personal photos. They could pick from pre set photos to tell a story.

I am happy that I chose this as my learning project. MORE THAN ANYTHING I can not wait to see the expression on my mom’s face when I give her the photo album. I am sure there will be happiness and tears. I hope she cherishes the photo album as much as I do!

Alright folks! The album is Complete!!!

My album is finally complete! Hours of hard work has paid off and I am so happy with the final product. I have just ordered my photo album and it looks like it will take a few days to arrive. Unfortunately, I do not think the album will be ready for Tuesday’s class. However, I have provided a couple screen casts of my final product and explained how/why I used the photos. Enjoy!

Quotes, Quotes, Quotes!

For the final part of my project I wanted to find some nice quotes and sayings to put in my family album. I went to pinterest right away to start pinning. I looked up ‘quotes and sayings about families’ and this is what came up:

I was actually surprised how little pinterest had for family quotes. I kind of struggled to find quotes that I wanted to use in my photo album, so where else to go but google. Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 6.42.50 PM

Here are some of my favourite quotes from my pinterest account that I used in my album:

I believe the quotes are exactly what my photo album needed. It adds another dimension and I find that quotes are good at pulling out people’s feelings. At the beginning of my photo album I wrote a personal note to my mom!

Almost Done! But….there are problems

This week I am doing the final touches on my photo album! I watched a youtube tutorial back in the semester and found out that I could arrange my pages at the end. Here is my screencast:

I touched on this during my screen cast but I seemed to run into some difficulties at the end of my photo album. I really wanted to add my brother and I’s grad photos; however Shuterfly was taking forever to load the photos. In fact they never did load.

Picture is still loading after 3 hours

So I ended up having to open a new browser and I first uploaded the photos to Shutterfly and then moved them to the album. I tried to search on google if others had had problems with photos not loading, but to my surprise nothing came up. I tried this idea because that is how I uploaded my photos to begin with.

I also mentioned my problem with moving page 1 and page 2. I searched on google and found out that the title and cover page can not be moved. I wish I would have known this before because I would have made sure I made those pages in the order I wanted them. It is now fixed though, after hours of redoing the two pages.

Page 1 and 2 are now in the right order!

It is exciting to be almost done the photo album!

Play and Exploration: Links to Digital Photo Album

Last week I decided to see if there were curriculum links to my learning project of making a digital album.I don’t think students would be able to use shutter fly in the classroom; however, the idea of pictures is what I focused on.

I remember back in my ECE class reading the Government of Saskatchewan document entitled Play and Exploration. In the play and exploration document one of the aspects is creating an inviting environment was with student pictures of them and their family in the classroom.

“Children experience healthy, inclusive and safe settings which enhance their learning and well-being. Children see themselves reflected in environments that stimulate communication, questions, investigation and exploration. Children sense that they and their families belong in the setting”    – Government of Saskatchewan

It is important that students see themselves in the educational setting. In my internship we had something called Star Student where two students were picked each week and from that would bring information about their family and pictures. We also had a bulletin board show casing pictures of the students doing work.

This is where we hung the star student posters for everyone to see!

Making my photo album has made me see the benefits of having and taking pictures. I also believe that as teachers we can use photographs for documentation. If there is something we want to show parents we can show them through photo documentation. In a Reggio Emilia article it states that documentation through photographs is key.

The Album is almost complete!

I am almost done my photo album and I am so proud of the results. In reflecting on this project I have realized how important photos are and the significance of keeping photos. There was a period of time that my family does not have many photos and it definitely made it hard to make the album. There were lots of photos from when my brother and I were young, but from about grade 7-10 there were hardly any photos. I also have an appreciation for digital cameras and how easy they have made peoples lives for taking pictures. It was much easier for me to download the more recent photos.

I wanted to make this photo album, but throughout I have also learned about myself and how I interpret technology. I did not want to make a you tube account. I was/still am scared in the fact that shutterfly has my pictures!!! I feel as though I see the benefits of using technology, but I am so hesitant to use it. I struggled to make a screen cast account because I was worried about getting a virus on my computer because I did not know if the program was reliable.

As for the program ShutterFly I learned that I like to have things organized and Shutterfly  did not disappoint. I found that I tended to just play around on the program and from that I was able to learn new things. I think if I were to use this program again I would pick a different album layout. The one I used seemed to have some restrictions and that got frustrating. However, I found where to get more embellishments!! Here is my screen cast on it what I found!

Here are some of my finished pages with the embellishments. I just need to add the text to each page.

When the album is completely done I will do a screen cast of it all!

Customizing: Get those Creative Juices Flowing!

I have been working hard on my photo album and customizing each page. It is taking a while to go through the different embellishments that Shutter Fly offers and finding the perfect one to go with the pictures. I am kind of a perfectionist too. This means that it takes me longer because I want to see every possibility. I have been playing around with the options on the program and so far my project is coming along!

Here is the screen cast of me customizing a page! I was a little sick when I made this.

I have realized that I find it harder to be creative online. When I have made scrap books I like to creatively cut the paper and arrange it. I find that it is different online because I can’t physically move the paper. I also am limited to what I can put on the album since each Shutterfly album option only has a certain amount of embellishments.
